GPAINNOVA to Launch a New Surface Finishing Process for AM Parts and New Formulations to Treat Aluminum at Formnext 2023

October 31 , 2023

GPAINNOVA, one of the leading technology business group specializing in metal surfacing, will unveil its latest patented surface finishing process, novel aluminum treatment formulations and new equipment at Formnext 2023, the premier trade fair for the AM industry. This event is scheduled to take place from November 7th to 10th in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, and GPAINNOVA will be showcasing its DLyte solutions for surface finishing at booth C28 in hall 11.1.

Introducing DryLyte Hybrid Finish

DLyte Hybrid before and after

During the show, GPAINNOVA will debut its newest innovation: DryLyte Hybrid Finish. This patented development represents a significant leap forward in surface finishing technology. It results in an accelerated surface finishing, which enhances material removal speed and offers several key benefits.

  • Enhanced Speed: Processes are 5x faster than the previous DryLyte version, facilitating swift production and reducing lead times.
  • Precision and Finish: The new method drastically reduces waviness and roughness, taking finishes from Ra 10 down to a 0.5 micrometers, all within only 40 minutes.
  • Low Material Removal: Ensuring minimal waste, the process removes less than 70 micrometers of material in 40 minutes.
  • High Resolution Finishing: Achieving a perfect balance between material removal and geometric preservation, the result is a finish of the highest quality.
  • Dual Benefits: Not only does the process enhance surface roughness, but it also simultaneously passivates the surface, ensuring longevity and resistance to external factors.

The new process facilitates automated post-processing in additive manufacturing of metal parts, bridging the gap between surfaces with waviness or macro-defects and those required for functional or aesthetic purposes.

At the exhibition, GPAINNOVA will unveil new equipment designed for the Hybrid process, which is able to treat parts with both the existing DryLyte solutions and the DryLyte Hybrid: DLyte 100PRO Hybrid and DLyte PRO500 Hybrid.

The Ultimate Solution for Aluminum Surface Finishing

In addition to DryLyte Hybrid Finish, GPAINNOVA will, for the first time, present new formulations and processes developed for aluminum. These advancements enable the treatment of aluminum parts. The solution has been validated for widely used in AM parts aluminum alloys such as AISi10Mg.

Polished aluminum

These advancements are poised to revolutionize the surface finishing landscape for aluminum components, addressing challenges and unlocking new possibilities.

As the demand for aluminum alloys in 3D printing continues to grow, GPAINNOVA is committed to overcoming the obstacles associated with aluminum in additive manufacturing. Aluminum alloys have risen to prominence and are projected to represent nearly 20 percent of total metal AM material shipments by 2030. Their appeal lies in their strength, thermal conductivity, lightweight properties, widespread availability, and cost-effectiveness, making them ideal for applications in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and transportation.

GPAINNOVA’s involvement in the upcoming Formnext edition underscores the company’s dedication to advancing the field of additive manufacturing, particularly in the context of aluminum. The development of new 3D printing technologies, including laser powder bed fusion and electron beam powder bed fusion, has paved the way for the production of intricate, high-precision, and cost-effective aluminum alloy components. With this in mind, GPAINNOVA is actively contributing to research in binder jet 3D printing of aluminum alloys, which holds significant potential for applications in electric vehicle and aircraft manufacturing.

While aluminum presents immense promise for high-volume additive manufacturing, challenges remain, particularly in optimizing alloys and processes. GPAINNOVA is committed to tackling these challenges head-on by perfecting surface finishing treatments for aluminum and its alloys.
